Carrying the Music Forward: Celebrating Massimiliano Lam at the Vivaldi International Music Competition 2026
As teachers, we hope every student discovers a lifelong love for music. Occasionally, however, a student comes along who reminds us why we fell in love with music ourselves. For me, that student is Massimiliano Lam.
Massimiliano joined my studio in 2019 at the age of 15. From our very first lessons, I recognized something special in him. He possessed not only natural musical ability, but also an artistic curiosity and emotional connection to music that felt strikingly familiar. As the years passed, I often found myself seeing my younger self reflected in him, a young pianist driven by passion, eager to explore every detail of a score, and constantly searching for deeper musical meaning.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that we are both Leos. Like many born under this sign, Massimiliano is ambitious, charismatic, and goal-oriented. Yet beyond those qualities lies something even more important: an unwavering love for music. Piano has never been just another activity for him; it has become an essential part of who he is.
One of the greatest joys of teaching Massimiliano has been watching him grow not only as a pianist but also as a young leader. Over the past few years, he has occasionally assisted me in teaching younger students. During those lessons, something remarkable began to happen. Parents and students would often smile and say, "He sounds just like Mr. Kyle," or "He's like a mini Mr. Kyle."
Every time I hear those words, I cannot help but smile.
As a teacher, there is no greater compliment than seeing your values, teaching philosophy, and musical approach naturally passed on to the next generation. It fills me with immense pride to see Massimiliano not simply copying my methods, but genuinely understanding the principles behind them and sharing them with younger students in his own authentic way. To witness a young musician carrying forward the legacy of artistry, discipline, and musical excellence is one of the most rewarding experiences I could ever ask for.
Musically, Massimiliano is unlike any other student I have taught.
His greatest gift is his extraordinary command of expression. He understands that music is not merely about accuracy or technique, it is about communication. Every performance is an emotional conversation between performer and audience.
His dynamic control is especially remarkable. When the music demands a powerful fortissimo, Massimiliano produces a magnificent, resonant sound that fills the room without ever becoming harsh. His playing possesses both strength and beauty, creating a sonority that is rich, confident, and deeply satisfying to hear. As his teacher, those are the moments that truly delight my ears.
Yet what impresses me even more is his ability to transition effortlessly into the opposite extreme. His pianissimo is delicate, gentle, and full of refinement, drawing listeners into moments of quiet intimacy. Few young pianists understand that true artistry lies not only in playing loudly, but also in knowing how to whisper through the piano.
What makes Massimiliano exceptional is the emotional honesty he brings to every performance. When listening to him play, it never feels as though he is simply performing notes on a page. Instead, it feels as though he is living inside the music itself. Every phrase carries intention, every climax has purpose, and every moment reflects genuine feeling.
Among all of my students, Massimiliano possesses one of the strongest natural abilities to communicate artistry through performance. Technical mastery can certainly be taught through years of disciplined study, but the ability to move an audience through authentic musical expression is something much rarer. Massimiliano has developed that gift through years of dedication, careful listening, and a sincere love for the art of piano performance.
His achievements at the 2026 Vivaldi International Music Competition are a testament to that artistry. Massimiliano was awarded First Prize in the Romantic B (Over Age 17) category, Second Prize in the Advanced (Age 18–22) category, and the prestigious Vivaldi Captivating Expression Special Prize, recognizing performers whose expressive artistry creates a profound emotional connection with listeners.
These awards are certainly worthy of celebration, but for me, they represent something far greater than competition success. They affirm the musician Massimiliano has become after years of dedication, perseverance, and artistic growth.
Looking back to the young fifteen-year-old who first entered my studio in 2019, I could never have imagined just how much he would grow not only into an accomplished pianist, but into a thoughtful young man capable of inspiring others through both his music and his character.
As his teacher, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride. Watching him mature into an artist whose performances can genuinely move an audience is incredibly fulfilling. Equally rewarding is seeing him mentor younger students with patience, kindness, and professionalism. Those moments remind me that music education extends far beyond learning notes and techniques; it is about shaping future musicians who will continue to inspire others.
