A Journey of Passion and Perseverance: Bao Gia Nguyen Wins First Prize at the Vivaldi International Music Competition 2026 season 2

Every student has a unique musical journey, and as a piano teacher, one of the greatest privileges is witnessing that journey unfold over many years. Some students impress you with their talent, while others inspire you through their unwavering dedication. Bao Gia Nguyen is one of those rare students who possesses both.

I first met Bao in 2019, when he was only nine years old. From our very first lesson, it was clear that his passion for the piano came from the heart. He wasn't just learning how to play an instrument, he was discovering a way to express his thoughts and emotions through music. Over the years, that passion has only continued to grow, becoming stronger with every lesson, every performance, and every challenge he embraced along the way.

Although Bao appreciates many styles of music, his heart has always belonged to contemporary repertoire. From an early age, movie soundtracks and video game music captured his imagination, allowing him to connect deeply with music that tells stories beyond words. For the 2026 Vivaldi International Music Competition season 2, Bao chose to perform "The Great Fairy Fountain" from The Legend of Zelda a piece filled with beauty, elegance, and emotional depth that perfectly reflects his musical personality.

One of Bao's greatest strengths as a pianist is his musical sensitivity. Throughout his years of study, I have watched him develop a refined awareness of tone, color, and expression that extends far beyond playing the correct notes. He is always searching for the most beautiful sound, carefully shaping each phrase with intention and emotion. His touch is gentle, his phrasing is thoughtful, and and he has a natural ability to produce a warm, elegant tone. These qualities are the hallmark of a pianist who listens deeply and allows the music to speak naturally.

Beyond his musical talent, Bao has always been one of the most responsible and dependable students I have taught. Since joining my studio, he has approached every lesson with discipline, curiosity, and a desire to improve. Whether performing in an intimate studio recital or on a larger stage, he consistently prepares with care and professionalism. Throughout the years, he has never let me down in any recital performance, earning the trust of his teacher and admiration of audiences who have had the opportunity to hear him play.

What makes this achievement even more meaningful is that the Vivaldi International Music Competition was Bao's very first piano competition. We entered the event simply hoping to give him the opportunity to gain experience, challenge himself, and share his love of music with international audiences. Winning “First Prize" was never the expectation, it became an unforgettable reward for years of growth and passion for music.

First Prize in the Piano Film/Game Music category

Vivaldi Captivating Expression Special Prize

Second Prize in the Piano Young Artist (Age 14–17)

Bao was awarded “First Prize in the Piano Film/Game Music category, Second Prize in the Piano Young Artist (Age 14–17) category, and the prestigious “Vivaldi Captivating Expression Special Prize", presented to performers whose artistry captivates audiences through exceptional emotional expression and musical communication.

Among these honors, the Captivating Expression Special Prize is particularly meaningful. It recognizes not technical perfection alone, but the ability to move listeners through genuine musical expression. As Bao's teacher, I could not think of a more fitting recognition. From the very beginning, I have encouraged him to look beyond the notes on the page and to search for the emotion behind every phrase. Seeing that quality recognized on an international stage is incredibly rewarding.

Watching Bao grow from a curious nine-year-old into the young pianist he is today has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my teaching career. Every lesson has marked another step in his artistic journey, and every performance has reflected his steady growth, maturity, and love for music. His progress has never been measured simply by faster fingers or more difficult repertoire, but by the depth of expression and confidence he brings to every performance.

As his teacher, I cannot fully express how proud and happy I am to witness this moment. Seeing Bao achieve these honors fills my heart with immense joy because I know the years of hard work, discipline, and perseverance that made them possible. Awards and trophies are wonderful milestones, but what makes me proudest is the musician Bao has become humble, responsible, expressive, and deeply passionate about his art.

I have always believed that true success in music is measured not only by awards but by the ability to communicate with honesty and touch the hearts of others. Bao has already begun to do exactly that.

Congratulations, Bao Gia Nguyen, on your outstanding achievements at the 2026 Vivaldi International Music Competition season 2. This is a milestone to celebrate, but I believe it is only the beginning of an exciting musical journey. I look forward to watching you continue to grow as an artist and to sharing many more memorable performances in the years ahead.
