The Piano as Her Storybook: Celebrating Olivia Vu at the Vivaldi International Music Competition 2026 Season 2

Music has a remarkable way of revealing a person's character, and in Olivia's case, it reflects her creativity, curiosity, and joyful spirit. She has never been content with simply playing the correct notes. Instead, she seeks to understand the emotions, imagery, and purpose behind every phrase, allowing each performance to tell a story that feels both genuine and personal

Olivia Vu joined my studio in 2023 at just 8 years old. From the very beginning, it was clear that she was not an ordinary young beginner. She is intelligent, curious, and full of questions, always wanting to understand not just how to play something, but why it works the way it does. She is the type of student who refuses to accept surface-level answers, constantly pushing herself to gain deeper understanding in her studies.

As a Libra, Olivia carries a lively and expressive personality. She can be a little mischievous at times, but always in a thoughtful way. She is someone who strongly believes in fairness and is not afraid to speak up or stand her ground when something does not feel right. This sense of justice and curiosity translates directly into her musical personality.

Beyond the piano, Olivia has a rich inner world. She loves reading books, collecting colorful marbles and gemstones, and observing details that many people overlook. These interests have shaped her imagination in a powerful way. When she plays music, it is never just a sequence of notes, it feels like a story unfolding, filled with colors, emotions, and shifting scenes, as if she is painting with sound.

One of Olivia’s most remarkable strengths is her ability to transform imagination into musical expression. Her performances are full of energy and contrast. She naturally creates different “colors” in her playing, bringing out character, mood changes, and emotional storytelling with a surprising level of maturity for her age. Listening to her play often feels like watching a painting come to life through music.

Like many young musicians, Olivia faces challenges along the way, but she is not easily discouraged. She is determined and persistent, and she approaches difficulties with curiosity rather than fear. Instead of stepping back from challenges, she tends to lean in and ask more questions, seeking understanding until things make sense to her.

Olivia's musical journey has always been encouraged by her family. She is the younger sister of Huy Gia Nguyen, one of my earliest winning students from the Vivaldi International Music Competition 2025 Season 1. This musical environment around her has helped nurture her growth, while also inspiring her to build her own identity as a pianist.

First Prize in Category Classical A (under Age 17)

Second Prize in Category Youth (Age 11-13)

Vivaldi Unique Personality Special Prize

At the 2026 Vivaldi International Music Competition season 2, Olivia achieved outstanding results, receiving First Prize in the Piano Classical A (Under 17) category, Second Prize in the Youth (Age 11–13) category, and the prestigious Vivaldi Unique Personality Special Prize, awarded to performers who demonstrate distinctive artistic identity and individuality through their music.

These achievements reflect far more than Olivia's musical progress. They reveal a young pianist who approaches every piece with imagination, curiosity, and a genuine love for storytelling. Rather than simply playing the notes, she brings her own ideas, emotions, and personality into every performance, making each interpretation uniquely her own.

As her teacher, I believe Olivia's greatest strength is not just her talent, but her eagerness to learn and explore. She is still at the beginning of her musical journey, yet she has already developed qualities that cannot be taught overnight, a creative mind, and the confidence to think independently. These are the qualities that will continue to shape her growth long after any competition has ended.

Teaching Olivia has been a wonderful reminder that music is about so much more than technique or awards. It is about encouraging young musicians to imagine, to ask questions, and to discover their own artistic voice. Every lesson brings new ideas, new conversations, and new moments of discovery, and it has been a joy to watch her grow into the thoughtful young pianist she is today.

Congratulations, Olivia Vu, on your wonderful achievements at the Vivaldi International Music Competition 2026 Season 2. I am incredibly proud of how far you have come, and I cannot wait to see where your imagination, creativity, and love for music will take you next.
